When it comes to feeding horses, gut health is something that deserves plenty of attention. A healthy digestive system does far more than just break down feed — it plays an important role in nutrient absorption, immune support, comfort, condition, and overall wellbeing.
That’s why prebiotic feeds are becoming more popular with horse owners looking to support their horses from the inside out.
Prebiotics are ingredients that help feed the beneficial bacteria already living in your horse’s digestive system. Unlike probiotics, which add live microorganisms to the gut, prebiotics act as nourishment for the good microbes already there.
In horses, these are often specific types of fibre or other non-digestible ingredients that travel through the upper digestive tract before being fermented in the hindgut.
Because horses are hindgut fermenters, the health of the hindgut is incredibly important. This part of the digestive tract is home to a large population of microbes that help break down fibre and support normal digestion. When this microbial balance is working well, horses are often better able to utilise their feed and maintain digestive comfort.
A healthy hindgut supports more than just digestion. It also contributes to:
better fibre breakdown
improved nutrient use
digestive stability
support for immune function
general wellbeing and comfort
When the hindgut balance is disrupted, horses may be more prone to problems such as loose manure, poor feed efficiency, digestive upset, and in some cases more serious concerns such as colic or laminitis.
Stress can also take a toll on the gut. Travel, competition, sudden feed changes, illness, antibiotics, and changes in routine can all upset the balance of the hindgut microbiome.
Prebiotic feeds may help by encouraging the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria. This can support a healthier digestive environment and help horses make better use of fibre in the diet.
For many horses, that may mean support for:
digestive health
nutrient absorption
feed utilisation
immune function
overall condition and wellbeing
Prebiotics can be especially useful during times when the digestive system may be under extra pressure, such as during travel, competition, training, seasonal feed changes, or after antibiotic use.
Some prebiotic ingredients may also help support the production of short-chain fatty acids during fermentation in the hindgut. These compounds are important for gut health and help nourish the cells lining the digestive tract.
Many horses may benefit from some level of digestive support, but prebiotic feeds can be particularly worth considering for horses that:
experience regular travel or competition
go through routine or dietary changes
seem sensitive to feed changes
need support maintaining condition
are in regular work
have a history of digestive sensitivity
Of course, every horse is different, and what suits one may not suit another.
There are a number of ingredients commonly used in horse nutrition that may offer prebiotic support. These can include:
fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) (e.g. Pron8ture)
mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) (e.g. Bio-Mos)
beet pulp (e.g. Speedibeet)
psyllium (e.g. AHS Psyllium Husk)
certain fibre-rich ingredients used in complete feeds or digestive supplements
You may find these ingredients in specialised feeds, balancers, or gut support products designed to help maintain digestive health.
While prebiotic feeds can be a helpful addition to the diet, they’re not a magic fix on their own. Good gut health starts with the basics too — plenty of forage, consistent feeding routines, clean water, gradual dietary changes, and feeding to suit the horse’s workload and condition.
Any new feed or supplement should be introduced gradually. Sudden changes can upset the digestive system, which is exactly what you want to avoid.
It’s also worth remembering that if your horse has ongoing digestive issues, unexplained weight loss, or signs of discomfort, it’s always best to seek advice from your vet or equine nutrition professional.
A healthy gut can make a real difference to your horse’s overall wellbeing. By helping to nourish beneficial gut bacteria, prebiotic feeds may support digestion, nutrient uptake, immune health, and day-to-day comfort.
For horses dealing with stress, changes in routine, or simply needing extra digestive support, prebiotic feeds can be a useful part of a balanced feeding plan.
