    How to Prepare Psyllium Husk and Encourage Your Horse to Eat It

    Psyllium husk is commonly fed to horses that live, graze or eat in sandy environments. When mixed with moisture inside the digestive tract, psyllium forms a thick, gel-like material. This may help collect loose sand and support its movement through the intestines and into the manure.

    Although psyllium is widely used as part of sand-management programs, it should not be treated as a guaranteed cure for sand accumulation or sand colic. Horses with a significant sand burden, abdominal pain, reduced manure production or suspected intestinal blockage require veterinary assessment. Research suggests that serious accumulations may respond more effectively to veterinary treatment using psyllium in combination with magnesium sulphate than to psyllium simply added to the feed at home.

    Why Can Psyllium Be Difficult to Feed?

    Anyone who has mixed psyllium with water will understand how quickly it changes texture. Within a short time, the light, dry husks absorb moisture and turn into a thick, sticky gel.

    Unfortunately, many horses do not like this texture. A horse may happily begin eating a feed containing psyllium, only to walk away once the mixture becomes gelatinous. Some horses also dislike the smell or unfamiliar mouthfeel of plain psyllium husk.

    The secret is generally to mix it into a feed your horse enjoys and offer it promptly—before it has time to become a bowl of jelly. 

    Should Psyllium Be Soaked Before Feeding?

    Plain psyllium husk should generally not be thoroughly soaked and left to expand before being fed.

    When psyllium is mixed with a large amount of water, it rapidly forms a bulky gel that can become unpalatable. Some equine nutrition guidance also cautions against pre-wetting psyllium heavily because it swells so quickly.

    Instead, add the measured amount to the horse’s normal feed immediately before serving. The feed can be very lightly dampened or mixed with an oil so the fine husks stick to the other ingredients, but it should be fed straight away.

    There is an important distinction between:

    • lightly dampening the feed to control dust and help the husks adhere; and

    • soaking the psyllium until it has already formed a thick gel.

    The first approach can make psyllium easier to consume. The second often makes the meal less appealing.

    Always follow the manufacturer’s directions where they differ, particularly when feeding a commercial pellet containing psyllium and other ingredients.

    A Simple Way to Prepare Plain Psyllium Husk

    Begin by measuring the amount recommended for your horse by the product manufacturer, equine nutritionist or veterinarian.

    Prepare the horse’s usual hard feed first. A small, appetising meal is often better than a large bucket because the horse needs to consume the entire amount to receive the intended psyllium serving.

    Mix the dry psyllium thoroughly through the feed. If needed, add only enough water to make the ingredients slightly damp and prevent the husks from separating. Serve the meal immediately rather than preparing it in advance.

    Make sure the horse has unrestricted access to clean, fresh drinking water. Psyllium absorbs a considerable amount of moisture, so good hydration is particularly important.

    How to Encourage a Fussy Horse to Eat Psyllium

    For a horse that refuses plain psyllium, introduce the taste gradually. Start with a small amount mixed through a familiar feed and increase it over several meals until the required serving is accepted.

    Try dividing the daily amount between two feeds, but only when this is consistent with the product directions or veterinary advice. A smaller quantity may be less noticeable and easier for the horse to finish.

    You can also mix psyllium into a suitable carrier your horse already enjoys, such as:

    • dampened chaff;

    • a small amount of the horse’s usual concentrate;

    • an approved low-sugar flavouring; or

    • a little oil to help the husks adhere to the feed.

    Do not disguise it by adding large amounts of high-sugar feed, particularly when managing an overweight horse or one with insulin dysregulation, laminitis risk or equine metabolic syndrome.

    Some horses simply object to the loose, fluffy texture of psyllium husk. For these horses, a pelleted psyllium product such as Sand Flush or EAC In-SandOut may be considerably easier to feed.

    Sand Flush

    Sand Flush is a pelleted product primarily based on psyllium husk. Its pellet form is designed to be more palatable and convenient than feeding loose husks.

    Current product guidance recommends feeding Sand Flush once daily for five consecutive days each month. It should not be fed continuously. The manufacturer explains that prolonged daily feeding may allow intestinal microbes to adapt to psyllium and use it as a fibre source, potentially reducing its intended sand-clearing effect.

    Because Sand Flush is pelleted, it can usually be added directly to the horse’s normal feed without the mess associated with loose psyllium. The exact amount required depends on the horse and the feeding guide on the packaging, so owners should weigh or measure it according to the current label rather than assuming that one scoop suits every horse.

    Sand Flush may be a helpful choice for horses that refuse plain husks but will readily eat pellets.

    EAC In-SandOut

    EAC In-SandOut is another pelleted option, but it differs from a basic psyllium pellet because it contains both psyllium husk and magnesium sulphate. It also contains millrun, oil and sugar-free flavouring or sweetener to improve palatability.

    The product is formulated for horses exposed to sandy soil and is intended to support gastrointestinal motility and the removal or reduced accumulation of sand.

    EAC’s current directions state that In-SandOut should be added to the horse’s usual feed and given for no longer than seven days each month. Its suggested rate depends on the horse’s body weight and whether the goal is prevention or removal.

    Because In-SandOut contains magnesium sulphate, owners should check any other magnesium-containing supplements in the diet. EAC advises that another magnesium supplement may need to be temporarily discontinued to avoid excessive intake. The product should not be fed if an impaction or intestinal blockage is present, and the horse’s bowel movements should be regular before beginning it.

    This makes In-SandOut a more specialised product than plain psyllium, and veterinary advice is sensible when treating a known or suspected sand burden.

    When NOT to feed psyllium husk and psyllium husk products

    Psyllium husk and psyllium husk products should only be fed to healthy horses. If your horse is in active colic, or has a large sand burden, do not feed psyllium husk and consult your vet for immediate advice. 

    Also, do not feed psyllium husk in hot weather. In order for psyllium husk to work properly, the horse needs to drink a sufficient amount of water. In hot weather, if the horse does not drink an adequate amount of water, then there is an increased risk of impaction colic. Therefore it is better to wait for a cooler week to feed psyllium husk in the summer months.

    Psyllium Is Only One Part of Sand Management

    No supplement can compensate fully for continued sand ingestion. Where possible, feed hay and concentrates from raised feeders, rubber mats, tubs or other clean surfaces rather than directly from sandy ground.

    Provide adequate forage so horses are less likely to grub for small pieces of feed or roots in bare soil. Avoid overgrazing paddocks, and pay particular attention to horses kept on short pasture or in dry yards where they may consume soil while searching for forage.

    Watch for warning signs such as recurrent mild colic, loose manure, unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, reduced manure production or abdominal discomfort. These signs are not specific to sand accumulation, but they warrant veterinary investigation.

    Psyllium can be a useful component of a preventative management program when fed correctly. For easy administration, mix plain husks into a small, appealing feed, dampen only lightly and serve immediately. When loose psyllium is consistently refused, palatable pellets such as Sand Flush or EAC In-SandOut can provide a convenient alternative.

    Always follow the current product label and seek veterinary guidance when sand accumulation is suspected. A horse showing signs of colic should be assessed promptly rather than managed solely with an over-the-counter sand-removal supplement.
